The Ugadi Plate

ఉగాది పళ్ళెం

Ugadi is the Telugu new year, and the plate is a small lesson. Neem flowers for bitter. Bellam for sweet. Magaya, the cut-mango pickle with menthulu, for sour. Some houses add a piece of avakaya beside it. The point is not a feast of ten curries. The point is that the year will hold more than one taste, and the meal admits that before the ordinary lunch begins.

If you are away from Guntur, set a small plate even if the rest is simple rice. Magaya from the jar, a little bellam or a bellam laddu, and neem if you have it. Eat a pinch of each before the rice. That is enough to call it Ugadi.

Do not heat the magaya. Festival pickle is still pickle.
